In the U.S., on average, we eat 31 animals per person, each year, or 2,400 animals during an average individual's lifetime. This does not include seafood, but does count poultry, which make up over 95% of the numbers.

Unfortunately, food animals have almost no protection in the U.S., and most spend their entire lives on factory farms, in conditions just sufficient to keep them alive. However, free range meat is slowly but surely growing in demand, as individuals learn more and decide the few extra bucks is worth it.
